Lions help keepRye community bus on the road

Their latest donation brings the Lions total donations to Rye Community Transport to £3,000 in the last few years.

The community bus plays an important role in enabling people to do their shopping and attend medical appointments.

It also reduces isolation for people in villages where transport links are poor.

The group run specially equipped buses, operated by volunteer drivers, which can help people with mobility problems and those in wheelchairs.

There is a 16 seater fully accessible minibus available to community groups and voluntary organisations to hire. The Dial - a - Ride service is available to people with mobility problems and can be joined for life or temporary membership is available for people visiting the area. All drivers are fully trained.

The group also work closely with local primary schools and help children to get to school as well as taking school groups to swimming classes and other activities.

Conrad Freezer, from Rye Lions, said: “A large part of this donation was raised at a Coffee Morning and Afternoon Tea, held in Rae Festing’s garden, hidden away off Rye High Street, and the Lions increased the money raised to £1,000.

“Following the Lions running their stalls at most local fetes, the Horse and Dog Show and the Maritime Festival, their last fund-raising event of the summer was our annual Rye Raft Race and Fete.
