Legal action begins after travellers claim Littlehampton field

ARUN District Council has started legal proceedings to remove a group of travellers pitched-up near Littlehampton’s seafront.

Around half-a-dozen travellers entered The Green, just behind the East Beach Café, yesterday afternoon (Tuesday, July 23).

Today (Wednesday, July 24) the council announced it had started legal proceedings to regain possession of the land.

A spokeswoman for the authority – which has overall responsibility for parks and open spaces in the district – said: “Arun District Council visited the grass area just east of Banjo Road on Tuesday afternoon as soon as possible after being made aware that travellers had gained entry to the site by the removal of low rail fencing.

“The council has started legal proceedings to regain possession of the land and it is likely that a court date will be set for early next week.”

Officers from Sussex Police are aware of the situation and have visited the site.
