Killer had asked medics for help

A MAN who strangled his mentally disturbed partner had pleaded with medics saying he was in no fit state to care for her just three days before the killing.

Timothy Bierton, 48, throttled Bexhill-born Julie Ann Wendel as she slept at their home in Darvel Down, Netherfield, in June after appealing for help from social services .

He was jailed for manslaughter for four years on Monday

Bierton rang 999 to report what he had done on the night of the killing before driving into Hastings police station and handing himself in.

Bierton, who had been drinking, told officers: "I will not have a woman nagging me day in day out. This will be paradise compared to the past two years."

An investigation is being launched into the psychiatric care offered to both Timothy Bierton and Julie Wendel in the months leading up to her death in June. Decisions by medics to allow Mr Bierton to continue to care for Miss Wendel despite his mental state were described by prosecuting and defending counsels as 'extremely unfortunate' at Monday's court hearing. Julie's Wendel's mother Pauline hopes the professionals will be able to learn from the investigation to prevent tragedies like this occurring in the future.
