‘Keep your chimney clean’ say Battle’sfirefighters

BATTLE firefighters are reminding residents to clear their chimneys regularly, following a spate of fires in the town on Tuesday evening.

Crews were called out to a property in Peppering Eye just before 6.50pm following reports of a blaze.

However the fire had been put out by the time firefighters arrived on the scene.

Another chimney fire was reported at 8.20pm, this time at a property in Rowbarns.

Firefighters were on the scene for about an hour tackling the blaze.

Crew Commander Jon Baker said: “The important thing for individuals to remember when using open fires and wood burners is to keep their chimneys and flues swept regularly.

“We recommend having the chimney swept at the start of the season, normally about September or October time.

“If you’re burning a lot of wood, sweep it again mid-season and as the season draws to a close, get it swept again.”

Battle firefighters offer free home safety visits, which include advice about how to avoid chimney fires.
