NewCEP employment co-ordinator Amber Wells said: 'Firms such as Cash Bases, Cavendish Communications, White Arrow and Brewsters Inn have given the unemployed the best Christmas presents they could have a new job!

'Some local firms have difficulty retaining and recruiting staff. However, there are many long-term unemployed who with the right help and training can be a useful and loyal addition to the workforce.

Successes include finding work and childcare for a 21-year old single mother and helping to secure a new job in the German financial market for a 55-year-old man.

The service, which is supported by the Newhaven Community Development Association and funded by the European Social Fund, is open to anyone living in the Seaford, Newhaven and Peacehaven area.

A leaflet with information about the scheme is available from the Hillcrest Community Centre, Hillcrest Road, Newhaven, or call 01273 612539.
