Hospital trust optimistic over latest MSK developments

Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s board of directors discussed the controversial decision by the Coastal West Sussex Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG) to award Bupa CSH Ltd a £235 million musculoskeletal contract, at Worthing Hospital.

Trust chairman Mike Viggers said: “I want to give absolute assurance to the board and public that we will do whatever is necessary to make sure patients’ best interests are protected.

“We have worked very closely with Bupa. We are being very professional and responsible in insuring that our patients and the 67 affected members of staff are fully informed. I feel very assured the right things are being done.”

The trust’s current contract for the provision of MSK services is due to expire on December 31. Bupa was due to start providing the service from January 1, but a delay in proceedings means the trust could remain in control temporarily until a resolution is found.

Mike Jennings, the trust’s commercial director, is leading a new joint impact assessment into Bupa’s bid, to find out what effect it will have on hospital services.
