PETWORTH'S Dave Johnston remembers his father as a kind, soft-voiced, unassuming man '“ a dad taken away from him tragically soon.

Dave was just eight when his father, Stephen, who was born in 1909, died from cancer in 1952.

But Stephen lives on through a fascinating collection of West Sussex photographs that he and Dave's mum, Nellie (1905-1989), took.

"My father was an optical instrument maker and a lens grinder," recalls Dave. "He rented a place in Chichester and he had his own lathe where he used to grind lenses and he would make his own camera. He studied it all."
