Help could be on way for homeless

Young people in the Arun district who have no home should soon have the opportunity to grow and thrive in specialist new accommodation.

Plans to develop a housing scheme known as a Foyer, which provides homeless young people between the ages of 16 and 25 with a safe and stable environment, are being investigated by Arun District Council.

Foyers are designed to help rehabilitate homeless young people by integrating accommodation with training, job seeking, personal support and motivation, and have proved successful in other parts of the country.

Following a decision by councillors, Arun's officers are looking into providing a Foyer. This will include identifying funding sources for the potential sites that would best suit the district's requirements.

Work will be done with the council's housing department and organisations with an interest in the issue to identify the provision required that best serves young people in greatest need.

Council leader Cllr Gillian Brown said: "We are committed to providing the best support possible to homeless young people in Arun, especially those in need of emergency housing, and we are taking a pro-active approach.

"A Foyer gives young people an opportunity to achieve their full potential and helps those who are homeless to escape the 'no-home, no-job' cycle by giving them a roof over their head with access to the support they need.
