Good Samaritan to the rescue after Littlehampton crash

A GOOD Samaritan from Littlehampton helped rescue a 78-year-old man who was left trapped after his car crashed and landed on its roof.

Matt Duff, of Trinity Way, was driving home along the A280 in Angmering, in the early hours of Thursday December 15, when he noticed an unusual set of lights coming from bushes next to the road.

When he got out to inspect the source of the mysterious light, he discovered a pensioner was trapped inside the overturned car.

Matt, 32, said: “I saw a set of lights coming from the bushes. At first I thought it was a tractor. But as I went towards it I saw it was a car. I didn’t think there was anyone inside it to begin with.

“But then the headlights began to flash at me and I could see the interior light switch on and off. That’s when I realised someone was trapped inside.”

Matt, who was already on the phone to emergency services, spoke to the trapped pensioner, who appeared confused and unsure of his surroundings, for about 20 minutes.

He said: “When I arrived, the man was trapped and didn’t know where he was. He was lying on the inside roof of his car but was still conscious.

“I asked him if he was hurt and he said, ‘yes’. He told me his head was hurt, which instantly concerned me.”

Emergency services arrived at the scene about 5am.

Fire crews freed the trapped man by pulling him through his car window. He was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Matt said: “It was very disheartening to see no-one else stopped to help out. It could have been something so much worse, and people were just driving by.”

He added he would like to get in contact with the man to find out how he is.

It remains unclear as to how the vehicle crashed.

Matt said: “I didn’t really do anything. It was the guys from the emergency services who did all the real work.”
