Fish die as sewage spills into astream by the A2100 in Battle

The burst happened last Thursday and Southern Water worked throughout the weekend to remove the sewage using tankers.

A Southern Water spokesman said: “We have worked with the Environment Agency to minimise the impact of a burst sewer in Battle.

“Regrettably the incident, which happened on Thursday July 18, caused wastewater to flow into a stream adjacent to the sewer.

“Tankers were brought in to divert these flows from a nearby pumping station and take them away for treatment while the sewer was repaired.

This was completed on Monday evening.”

Local man Paul Questier said: “The sewage leaked by a river line and field on the A2100 road.,

“Obviously the river has become very polluted and lots of fish are dead.

Mr Questier says it is not the first time this has happened: “A similar event occurred a couple of years ago and loads of fish died then as a result.”
