Firemen break strike

WORTHING firefighters broke picket lines to help a man seriously injured in a car accident.

They joined retained crews from East Preston, as well as Royal Navy personnel, on the A27 at Angmering to free the driver trapped in the wreckage on Sunday afternoon.

"The retained crews at East Preston were grateful to be joined by colleagues who had left their picket lines to assist us along with the Royal Navy," said East Preston Fire Station commander Jon Mays.

"All the crew members worked well together to achieve a satisfactory outcome, and it shows the commitment of the firefighters that serve the communities in our area."

The Rover 414 came off the westbound A27 at about 2.30pm, and careered through a hedge before turning over in a field near the Angmering motor racing circuit.

The driver was airlifted to St Richard's Hospital, Chichester, with injuries to his head, chest, legs and arm, and was expected to make a full recovery.

PC Mark Brown from Chichester RPU, is asking witnesses to contact him on 0845 60 70 999.
