Foxglove- Hard ground leads to hard looks from a young hound

THE young dog knows that the wind has got up, that a telephone call has been made, and that familiar words have been said. She is too clever by half. She is pacing and looking at me out of dark amber eyes. Occasionally she emits a low yowl, more like a big cat than a dog.

What she does not know '“ or does not realise the significance of '“ is that the ground is rutted and hard, far too hard to run her.

She has neat, compact feet and long slender legs that might sustain irrevocable damage. She is also a little out of condition, being not long past her season, where many bitches lose muscle tone and joint stability. I am not taking her.

From the depths of an armchair that I would like to consider mine, lighter amber eyes stare under a pale fringe.
