Farm Diary by Gwyn Jones

PLENTY of rain in the last week to redress the balance, and water the maize seed, grass, gardens and trees: perfect. I doubt we have had much more than an inch, but other areas have had a lot more.

It has been sensible rain, with light showers softening the ground in preparation for the steady rain that followed. The grass is shooting out of the ground, the silage fields are bulking up nicely, and the maize is up and away.

It looks pretty unsettled this week, and we will become anxious to make our grass silage soon. The clamp is all washed out and ready for refilling, the additive is being brewed, and the gateposts are holding their breath!

I had a few close encounters with nature these last few days. I was walking the silage fields the other day in my shorts, on the mobile phone as usual as I hopped over a small ditch, only to land next to a fat adder; all coiled up asleep in the sun.

Luckily for me it chose to slip away over the bank rather than attack, but it gave me my adrenaline fix for the day. Gwenan caught another fox in her trap, which now makes four. It was swiftly dispensed with, and if they stopped killing the chickens, we could all live together happily.
