Education roadshow will explain new diploma system

YOUNG people from across East Sussex will get the chance to find out more about new diplomas when a special roadshow visits the county next week.

The Diploma Roadshow at Sussex Downs College, Eastbourne, on Tuesday will give young people more information about the diplomas and what studying for one will be like.

The new 14-19 Diplomas have been introduced nationally this year and are an alternative to traditional GCSE and A-Level courses. The diplomas are available at a range of levels ensuring they can support progression to higher education.

In East Sussex, more than 300 pupils have begun studying the new courses which are being delivered at secondary schools and colleges across the county. The Diplomas have been endorsed by both our local universities as a suitable and relevant qualification for future progression.

In a phased introduction, this year sees diplomas in construction, engineering, IT and creative and media offered in the five areas across the county.

Next year, as the diplomas are extended to include hair and beauty studies, manufacturing and product design, business admin and finance, environmental and land-based studies, society, health and development and hospitality and catering, the number of students is expected to rise to about 1,500. Eventually there will be 17 new diploma courses in total and these will all be available as options to all young people in East Sussex by 2013.

The innovative and interactive roadshow will provide younger students with an overview of the diplomas available to them and it has been designed specifically for pupils in years 9 and 11 as they prepare to make their choices for the academic year starting in September 2009.

Cllr David Elkin, county cabinet lead member for learning and school effectiveness, said: "I am really delighted that we've got the roadshow coming to East Sussex. I understand it's a very hands-on interactive roadshow that will give young people lots of information about the options that are open to them.

"The new diplomas offer a different way of learning for those whose needs are not met by the current curriculum and it's really important that our pupils are fully aware of the extra study options that are becoming available to them."

There are still some places available for young people wanting to attend the roadshow. Organisations wanting to book places for their learners should contact Laura Tafa, Connexions & 14-19 Team on 01323 463532 or email [email protected].
