Drifting boat sparked emergency call-out near Selsey

Lifeboat volunteers were paged to a drifting vessel out at sea near Selsey this afternoon (Tuesday, December 22).

According to Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team, which was alerted shortly before 1pm, it 'managed to get eyes' on the boat off Bill Point, which was 'drifting to the east'.

A spokesperson said: "A request was put in for the launch of Selsey Lifeboat.

"The team relocated to the lifeboat station to get better eyes on as the vessel had now drifted right round the Bill and was now off the station."

Both Selsey Lifeboats were launched and a decision was made to 'establish a tow line' to the vessel and take it to Chichester Harbour.

The team then stood down to return to station.

“The coast and the sea can catch you out whether you’re local or not," the spokesperson said. "Our message remains: call 999 Coastguard if you’re in trouble.

"Please help us and our families stay safe. Be aware of the risks, keep your distance.

"In an emergency out at sea, on the beach or along the coast dial and ask for the Coastguard."
