DO IT BY BUS

"Take the bus '“ it's no fuss" '“ that's the message from South Downs Joint Committee (SDJC) in a series of five new 'South Downs Bus Walks' leaflets, highlighting routes that start and finish at bus stops between Shoreham and Beachy Head.

Varying in length from 2.5 miles to 7.5 miles, the walks are suitable for all the family and the leaflets flag up viewpoints, places of interest and flora and fauna that may be seen en route as well as revealing new areas of Open Access Land.

Simon Culpin, Assistant Area Manager with the SDJC says: "Now people will be able to relax on the bus and then explore new areas of Open Access land, away from the usual footpaths and bridleways, where they are free to walk, have a picnic or fly a kite. It's also great to be able to finish a walk and enjoy a drink in a pub knowing you only have to step on board a bus to get home.

" I hope lots of people will be inspired to enjoy the area without taking a car. They can make a positive difference to the South Downs which will benefit from fewer car journeys and ultimately reduced air and noise pollution."

Funding for the leaflets - which also includes walks in the Brighton and Eastbourne areas - has been provided by the Countryside Agency's Access Management Grant Scheme which backs the promotion of the new Open Access Land. Other funding was provided by West Sussex County Council, Brighton and Hove City Council and the Sustainable Transport and Tourism Project.
