Dignitaries summoned for service

High Sheriff of West Sussex, Gordon Tregear continued a long tradition by holding a Judges' Service in Chichester Cathedral on Friday, attended by judges from the crown courts at Lewes and Chichester.

Historically there used to be a Judges' Service at the beginning of each court term, though this has changed because the courts are sitting all the time and judges work much harder.

Today the decision to hold a service is at the discretion of the High Sheriff. Roger Reed held the last one in 2004 but there was a long gap before that one.

This year's service was one of the biggest to be held, with a procession involving more than 300 people and a change in the format of the service.
