Rotary club spokesman Malcolm Williams said he was delighted with the turnout and thanked everyone involved who had worked so hard and given their services free of charge.

He added: "A good time was had by all and I certainly enjoyed the day."

Audiences were able to sample mulled wine, mince pies and hot chestnuts while watching an entertainment extravaganza of local musicians, singers and drama groups on a stage set up in the square.

Master of ceremonies for the day s entertainment was Peter Morgan, who played a selection of Christmas music on his organ in between the acts.

The Countess of Arundel presented prizes for the Spirit of Christmas poster competition.
