CROSSING PROBLEMS LEAD TO HUGE SNARL-UP

A LORRY which broke down on the railway level-crossing at Beddingham, near Lewes, at 7.20am yesterday (Thursday) caused traffic chaos on the A27.

The crossing barriers came down on to the lorry.

Trains were ushered through slowly by a level-crossing attendant until the barriers were lifted and the lorry was able to get through.

However, the key mechanism then jammed and the barriers had to be operated manually until 8.40am.

Trains were delayed by about 10 minutes, but the traffic situation was much worse. There were tail-backs for eight miles as far as Polegate.
