Rose Green dad risks his life to protect his family

A Rose Green man put his life on the line to protect his young family after being attacked with a sledgehammer during an attempted robbery.

Bricklayer Scott Perryman was left to crawl up his stairs with a bloodied face and battered hip after the ordeal.

Two hooded males had been using a sledgehammer to smash open the door to computer shop Scanstation, below his home at 1.30am on Sunday.

They ran off as he challenged them, and he chased them into nearby Parkfields Road before he was attacked.

“I was lying in bed and I heard banging outside, so I flew downstairs and there were two guys standing there trying to get into the shop.

“They both ran, but I didn’t see another guy in a car, who stopped just in front of me.

“When I turned around I was hit with a sledgehammer in the mouth but luckily I fell back with it.

“When I tried to get back up I was hit in the hip with the hammer.

“Then I blacked out.”

Scott, 26, was taken to St Richard’s Hospital immediately after the attack at Rose Green Road and police arrived shortly after to inspect the scene.

Scanstation owner Robert Thomas, pictured, inset, received a phone call from Scott straight after the attack.

Mr Thomas, of Felpham, said he was ‘indebted’ to Scott for his heroic actions.

“Because of him the shop didn’t get burgled, he’s a bit of a local hero or a nutcase – depending on what way you look at it,” he said.

The two suspects in the attack were wearing dark jeans and hoodies and the car was described as a dark green or blue Mercedes estate.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “The man acted promptly and robustly, and clearly prevented what could have been a high-value burglary.

“We are keen to hear from anyone who was in the Rose Green Road area early on Sunday morning and saw such a car or any other suspicious activity.

“Please call us on 0845 60 70 999 quoting serial 0165 of 9/10.”
