COUNTY NEWS: Sussex inventor of banoffi pie dies
The Sussex inventor of the world-famous banoffi pie has died.
Nigel Mackenzie came up with the idea of combining boiled condensed milk, bananas, coffee and short-crust pastry more than 40 years ago at The Hungry Monk in Jevington, near Eastbourne.
He created the much-loved dessert with his head chef Ian Dowding in 1972.
The pudding was formally recognised by the Oxford English Dictionary in 1997 and in 2002 ice-cream firm Häagen-Daz was given the go-ahead by Mr Mackenzie, who died aged 71, to create a Banoffi Pie flavour.
In 1968 the Mackenzies bought a tea room at Jevington in a 16th-century building, which was formerly used by monks, spending six months converting the property into a restaurant, naming it The Hungry Monk.
Mr Mackenzie and his wife Sue closed down the restaurant in January 2012 to convert it into holiday homes.
Mr Mackenzie died on May 29.
