COULD you be a Special Constable?

That is the appeal this week as Sussex Police runs Special Constable Week in a bid to recruit volunteers.

The appeal is Sussex-wide but is particularly pertinent to Bexhill.

Inspector James Scott said on Monday: "Two Special Constables currently operate out of Battle and are very useful.

"But at present no Special Constables operate out of Bexhill.

"We are looking for volunteers, especially people who live in the town and have a care for what it needs."

Sussex Police appeal leaflets have the sub-title: "Unlocking your potential - securing our future."

Chief Constable Martin Richards say in a message: "I see Special Constables as key players in Team Sussex.

"I recognise the investment that they are prepared to make to help their communities and I am grateful for it.

"We will ensure that Sussex Police invests in their training and development in order that they can play a full part in neighbourhood policing.

"Specials have an important role in helping us to meet our target of improved service to the people of Sussex.

"I expect all my staff to support Special Constables, to welcome them into the organisation and help them to succeed in the role for which they have volunteered."

Specials are volunteers who receive training from their local force to work with and offer support to regular police officers.

They give at least four hours a week. Often this is in a single shift but the working hours are flexible and many give more time if they can spare it.

Specials have the same powers as a regular officer and wear a similar uniform. The work is entirely voluntary but certain allowances are available.

Full details are contained in the leaflets, available from Bexhill Police Station in Terminus Road or the Observer office at Sackville Road.
