Conkers shortage threatens annual Angmering competition

The organiser of Angmering’s annual conker championships is making an urgent appeal for help to find the essential ingredients for this year’s contest... conkers.

The spiky fruits of the horse chestnut are in short supply as a result of diseased trees and poor weather during blossom time.

For the past 33 years Anthony Booty has organised the team conker competition for S.C.O.T.C.H. (Spotted Cow Organisation To Create Help), at the village pub from which it takes its name and where the event is held.

Many thousands of pounds have been raised during that time for various charities.

“For the first time in all those years we are faced with a lack of ‘competition’ sized conkers,” said Anthony, of The Square, Angmering.

“Most of the regular trees, producing good yields of conkers, have little, or no, horse-chestnut this year. Some of the large trees have been devastated by disease.”

Anyone who can help Anthony collect some of the 600 conkers, or would like to take part in the competition, can call him on 01903 770142.

This year’s contest is on Sunday, October 14, and will be in aid of Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice.
