Colourful show despite the weather

In spite of the unseasonable strong winds and driving rain suffered by gardens, Bognor Regis Horticultural Society members managed to produce a colourful and varied display of flowers and plants for their summer show on Thursday, June 28.

The members of the society are the judges at this summer show with the final choice of best in show announced by president Norman Page who also offered advice on choices and made helpful comments on how exhibits should be displayed. He also presented the awards.

The results were as follows: Jennings rose bowl '“ best rose '“ K Weston; Rishman cup '“ best sweet peas '“ C Lowden; Coombes cup '“ best exhibit overall '“ M Whitehead; five sweet peas '“ M Huntingdon; seven sweet peas '“ G Lowden; pinks '“ K Weston; rose '“ K Weston; button hole rose '“ P Carrott; flowering shrub '“ M Whitehead; flowering perennial '“ G Lowden; flowering pot plant '“ M Whitehead; foliage pot plant '“ P Dawson; vegetable '“ M Huntington; soft fruit '“ M Huntington.

To round off the evening Tony Newman, chairman and show secretary, produced a general knowledge quiz which tested memories.

Top marks were gained by Janine Thomas who won a bottle of wine.

The next meeting is on Thursday July 26 at 7.30pm in Jubilee Hall, Chalcraft Lane, North Bersted.

The speaker will be David Stuart on the subject of pots and containers. Entrance is 1.50 for non-members tea, coffee, biscuits and a raffle ticket included. Visitors always welcome.
