Collection kick starts Chichester mayor’s charity year

YOUTH workers have welcomed the support they have been given by the new Chichester mayor, Peter Budge.

Mr Budge has chosen two youth charities to support during his time in office – The Chichester Bell Tower Youth Drop-in and Chichester Boys Club.

Sam Harding, drop-in centre co-oordinator, said: “Following their recent services and provision to the youth of the city, Mr Budge has chosen to support both projects for the coming year in the hope of seeing more young people impacted through this relatively recent provision of social action.”

The Chichester Bell Tower Youth Drop-in launched in November last year and has seen hundreds of schoolchildren through its doors so far.

Mr Harding explained: “It was established after extensive research showing a lack in daily provision for young people between school finishing and parents coming home after work.

“The drop-in opens its doors each school day in order to cover this time period.

The Chichester Boys Club has been an ongoing project aimed at both girls and boys aged nine to 16.

It offers a varied and diverse range of exciting activities, in a friendly and inviting atmosphere.

The programme of activities is developed by young people to support and encourage personal, social and emotional development, with a lot of fun.

The boys club opens every Tuesday between 6pm and 8pm and has a greater focus on learning activities for young people.

The main fundraising for the year began on Saturday, June 13, with a street collection, when Mr Budge joined those involved in managing both projects.

He had, however, set the ball rolling on day one. Walking to Chichester City Council for the mayor-making ceremony on May 20, he bought two buckets. He put them at the back of the hall, inviting donations, and nearly £100 was raised.
