Christmas cheer for Sidley group

More than 50 pensioners were treated to a slap-up Christmas lunch at Sidley House.

The snow and ice held off on Sunday and the annual event organised by Sidley Community Association volunteers went ahead even though others at the weekend were cancelled.

The pensioners were picked up from their homes and delivered to Sidley House where they were welcomed with a glass of sherry before sitting down to turkey with all the trimmings.

Afterwards they were entertained by Julie George and the Jacks Singers with a selection of songs, and also by Tim Murray, who performed a selection of juggling feats.

They then had a cup of tea and mince pie and were taken home.

Stephen White of SCA commented: “It went really quite well. We didn’t think to cancel because we had sent out over 50 invitations, and a lot of people coming we didn’t have telephone numbers for - so how we could have let them know? And so it was very lucky because on Sunday the weather couldn’t have been better really and the snow had all cleared. It was not even raining, so that was pretty good.

“I would like to thank all the helpers but especially Bexhill Police and Senlac Rotary Club, who helped with serving the lunch and with transport. East Sussex County Council kindly allowed us to use the hall and Hilde once again cooked the lunch.”

SCA has held this Christmas get-together ever year and volunteers are involved on every level from organising transport to peeling potatoes.

Stephen added: “It was all of us - the trouble is we are a small band still, but growing and we keep going.”
