Please note: When I refer to the Village in the column it is the whole of the Parish that I am referring to, that is Broad Oak and Brede.

The Fire Fighters Fête: moved to the Fire Station because of the total downpour, but Chris was so pleased that the people from the Village who braved the weather and were not put off by it went and supported the event, their valiant effort was very much appreciated.

With ladies from St George’s Church I was doing the teas and when I slipped downstairs for a hot dog the place was heaving and much laughter could be heard as the Lindy Hop took place. The event did not possible raise as much as they would have if it had been in the recreation ground but around £900 was raised and Chris would like to thank everyone who helped and supported the event for their magnificent contribution on the day. £49.00 was also raised for St George’s, a similar amount was raised at the Coffee morning held on Saturday and Bobby and Betty also thank all those who went along and supported their effort.

R.B.L Poppy Appeal: There is an urgent need for a local organiser for the R.B.L. In the Brede, Broad Oak & Udimore area.It requires dealing with the poppy stocks, preparing trays and collecting boxes and distributing them to the various collectors. After the poppy fortnight in October/November the trays and boxes are brought back and the money is counted and banked. A list of the current collectors, etc. is available, if you feel you might like to help please contact either Beryl Crouch 01424 882120 or John may 01424 882667

Speedwatch: are trying desperately to find more members, so many people tell them how they’d like them to stand outside their houses because the traffic speeds by, but they never want to join the group to do something about it. Let’s see if their request can get some more members. Please contact Denis 01424 882046 Also can I add a note: Please do not wave your fist or abuse these people, they are trying to keep our roads safer for us all; young and old, those of us that can nip across a road in a jiffy are fine but we were all young once and God willing we will all be old but maybe not so quick crossing the road and will be grateful to the slowing of traffic. Those trying to get out of their drives will also be grateful for slower traffic. So support the people who stand in all weathers trying to do their best for us all.

Friday 31 July: Yoga is at 9.30am in Udimore Community Hall. Brede Farmers Market is from 10am – 12 noon in Brede Village Hall. I wonder what will be different this week? It is lovely to have the usual stalls to go to but it is interesting to look and maybe buy something from the traders that come now and again. There were scientific toys for sale last week and will be there throughout the summer holiday. WEA is in Udimore Community Hall at 11.30am.

Saturday 1 August: The Brede Steam Giants will be operating today from 10am – 4pm there is also a World War 2 bunker to visit all at the bottom of Waterworks Lane Brede . A good place to take the family. The Village Dance will take place in Brede Village Hall at 7.30pm for those wishing to trip the light fantastic, foxtrot, waltz, tango, quickstep etc. and sequence dance. Money raised from the event goes to charity.

Sunday 2 August: The Church Services are as follows: Father Anthony White conducts the Mass service at 9.00 am in St Theresa’s Catholic Church on the old Northiam Road, if you need to contact the Father his number is 01424 773125

At St George’s Church the Sung Eucharist starts at 9.30am and Father Martin can be reached on 01424 883408. The Church’s Website is http://www.stgeorgesbrede.org.uk The Reverend Robin Roberts will be preaching at the Methodist Church in Broad Oak at 10.30am.

Our Cricketers are in a fix they have not been playing the last few matches as they did not have a full team, they need a new person to be Captain and at their AGM it was feared the club might have to fold. Uniformed groups - Are closed for the summer holidays but all will be back in September. If you wish your child to join; then you will find the contact details below. The Guiding section meet in the small hall of Brede Village Hall; the Rainbows meet from 4.15- 5.15pm, they welcome girls aged between 5-7 years, the Brownies meet from 5pm – 6.30pm for girls 7-11 years old. Tuesday 4 August: Pilates are in Udimore Community Hall at 9.15 and 10.25am Brede Painting for Pleasure group meet at 9.30 am in Brede Village Hall. Planning your August Bank Holiday Weekend? Make Brede your destination for at least one of the days. Marvel at the wonderful flower displays in St George’s Church for their annual Flower Festival and then go along the road to Brede Village Hall and enjoy the variety and competence of the Brede Painting for Pleasure group at their annual exhibition of work created in the past year. Free parking and refreshments available at both events.

Wednesday 5 August Pilates are in Udimore Community Hall at 9.15 and 10.25am.

Mother’s Union are not meeting in Brede this month but will meet for Mary Sumner Day Service on Monday 10 August in St Mary’s Rye at 11am ( please take a packed lunch) then not until September.

The column might be less busy in the next few weeks as all the monthly groups take a rest apart from Design with Flowers next week. I hope all the young people who are now on holiday from school will have a wonderful break, all I ask is that you take care and be aware of the increasing traffic on our roads. If any one is using the footpaths make sure you are aware of the countryside code. If a gate is shut, shut it behind you, if it is open leave it open as many Farmers only have water in one place and it is often in the field next to the one the livestock are in. Whatever you are all doing have a great summer and remember to take your litter home with you.

Brede/Broad Village Tidy Up Saturday 22 August: Volunteers please meet in the Village Hall at 10am for coffee and briefing and if you have them bring a pick up stick and Hi-fiz jacket they and gloves will be provided at the Hall for those without. If possible teams of two will be sent out . The more who join the effort the more ground can be covered. If you are visiting our beautiful Village do not dump your litter here or any where else in Sussex. It is such an unnecessary eyesore. It is also a good time to look around your own property’s and make sure hedges do not hang over footpaths and roads. The Parish Council have been out looking to see who has the best garden, look in the Brede Newsletter that will be dropping through your door all the categories are in there as well as other information. On behalf of you all I shall thank Cllr Rod Came for putting it together. The next issue will be out in December Please let Rod know if you would like anything put in that edition well in advance.

Dog Fouling: is becoming an increasing problem, your dogs mess is your problem, the Parish Council has had reports of this happening in our Village and it is not an acceptable practise, please pick it up in baby nappy bags (most useful) and if not near home there are a number of dog bins in the Village. Please use them.

Friday 21st August: the Rainbow Trout are holding their first Comedy Club Night!! 3 comedians hand picked by the famous comedy club, live in the Garden Room at the pub from 7.30pm. This is a ticket only event and spaces are limited. Tickets have gone on sale and have already started selling so if you want to go along they advise you to get in quickly.

Another 2 dates: for your diary are Friday 2nd October and Friday 11th December. 2nd October when they have their Brilliant Blues Brothers Tribute night with a 2 course meal. Singing all the favourites such as Soul-man and Tail feather, the Professional act will be entertaining you all night. They have played many famous venues around the country and it promises to be a great night. Fri 11th December is their Christmas ABBA Tribute Night is sold out. The events are ticket only and limited availability so if you want to join the fun, let them know as soon as you can! 01424 882031
