About an hour later, two burglaries were reported to police from communal flats in Bannings Vale, Saltdean, where the residents are also elderly.

A man entered two unlocked flats and took a handbag from each.

Sergeant Robin Fuller of Peacehaven police said: 'I would urge all local elderly residents to secure their flats, locking both the external and their internal doors.

'If an intercom is fitted do not release the door unless you are sure of who the person is whether they want general access or are visiting a named individual.

'If a caller attempts to enter the property, please ask for and check any identification that they may have.'

The thefts happened on February 16.
