Bognor schools hit by staff strike

Striking teachers have today closed two schools around Bognor Regis.

A further three schools have been partially closed as a result of the members of the National Union of Teachers taking part in their first national strike in more than 20 years. The walkout has affected the following schools, according to information from West Sussex County Council yesterday:

Nyewood CE Junior School '“ closed; Slindon CE Primary School '“ closed; Rose Green Infant School '“ partially closed; The Glade Infant School '“ a nursery, reception and year one class closed.

Felpham Community College '“ closed for years seven, eight, nine and ten. Open for year 11. Years 12 and 13 will have access for independent study.

The dispute is linked to a 2.45 per cent pay proposal from an independent review body for this September followed by 2.3 per cent in 2009 and 2010.

The NUT argues that teachers' pay should be linked to the inflation and the wages of other graduate professions. Staff from other teaching unions are expected to work normally today. A total of 41 primary and 13 secondary schools around West Sussex have been affected by the strike.
