Birthday celebrations at Laburnum Centre

A BIRTHDAY cake was enjoyed by the members of a Bognor Regis centre.

The treat from the Laburnum Centre’s kitchen marked the end of the 21st year since the building opened.

It has played host to thousands of men and women.

Among them is original member Audrey Price, 89, who joined on its 1990 opening day.

“I love it here,” she said. “You get friendship and laughter and the chance to join in a wide range of activities here.

“I go around and make sure anybody who is on their own is not on their own any longer.”

She is one of the 100 dedicated volunteers who help Age UK West Sussex run the Lyon Street centre as a focal point for enjoyment for some 750 over-50s.

Manager Colin Pope said: “The Laburnum Centre is a unique service offering something for everyone.”

It hosts 50 activities in a friendly environment under one roof.
