Bins overflowing and not collected for weeks in Rye

Residents on Udimore Road and Ashenden Avenue are just some of those whose their bins and bin stores are overflowing with weeks worth of waste.

Rother District Council changed the company which collects the bins in June and says it has been working closely with the new contractor to address any disruption caused by the change.

However, that was small consolation to residents dealing with piles of rubbish in soaring temperatures.

Janice Crutchlow, of Badger Gate, Udimore Road, lives in sheltered housing and described their bin store as ‘disgusting’.

“The council keep saying they will send a truck out to clear it but nothing turns up,” she said.

Mrs Crutchlow said residents can’t open their windows because of the smell and the flies.

“There are 29 flats here and the bin store gets full up every week so you can imagine how bad it is after three weeks of no collection,” she said.

“I think it’s disgusting and it should not happen nowadays.

“We pay for a service to the council for rubbish collection and we’re just getting nothing at all.”

Malcolm Turk, of Ashenden Avenue, said their bins have not been collected for three weeks and described the council as useless.

“All the residents are up in arms,” he said.

“Our green bins have been out for at least three weeks.

“Every week the bins are never collected on the day we put them out and this is the longest we have waited.”

According to Mr Turk,, there are 16 houses on Ashenden Avenue, each with four bins, so around 200 bins worth of rubbish are sitting outside their houses.

“We have heard excuses about the new contractors but we had no problems whatsoever with the old people,” he said.

Mr Turk said he had been trying to ring the council to complain and organise for the bins to be collected but the office is shut on a Wednesday and he said when he does get through, they don’t reply.

The district council said it was very apologetic about the whole situation and was doing its best to resolve it quickly.

“We would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused to residents,” a Rother District Council spokesman said.

“A change to the service introduced in June has caused some short term disruption, and we are working closely with the contractor to ensure any issues are addressed as quickly as possible.

“We would urge anyone with a missed bin collection to report it to us as soon as possible online at www.rother.gov.uk to enable a collection to be made.”
