Biker seriously hurt in Udimore mail van crash

A 38-year-old man from Ninfield has been flown to the Royal Sussex County Hospital with serious injuries after his red Aprilia motorbike collided with a postal van on the Udimore Road on Saturday.

Police and emergency services were called to Broadlands Row, between Broad Oak and Udimore, at around 11.55am. It is thought the motorcyclist, who was travelling west, collided with the rear of the van, which had stopped to empty a post box.

PC Jonathan Cook, from the East Sussex Road Policing Unit, said: “The motorcyclist has received several fractures and internal injuries but is fortunately now stable in hospital.

“We would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or the saw the Aprilia motorbike, that may have been accompanied by other motorcyclists prior to the incident.

“Please call 101 quoting Operation Pickwell if you any information that could help police with their enquiries.”

There was traffic chaos while the road was closed, with traffic diverted down narrow Stubb Lane.

Resident Richard Holmes said: “It was chaotic for quite a while on Saturday afternoon.

The 58-year-old post office worker, from the Rye area, was badly shaken but uninjured.

He would like to thank local residents who gave him support after the accident happened.
