Last year constant rain failed to stop thousands from thronging the town centre to see Brighton and Hove Albion star Darren Freeman kick off proceedings.

Jane Cooper-Schoolcraft, from Newhaven Business Centre, said: 'We were lucky to obtain Darren s services, but with Brighton playing away on the day in the FA cup, none of their players are able to make the event.

'Having a famous person is a great crowd- puller and we would like to hear from anyone that can help.

However, the evening s biggest star, Father Christmas, is guaranteed to show. And he will be forsaking his traditional transport when he arrives in by Mini, giving Rudolph a welcome night off.

Jane said: 'It turns out Santa is a fan of the great British Mini, and the local Meridian Mini Club has offered to transport him to Newhaven in a Mini convoy for the evening.

As well as the chance to stock up on Christmas gifts there will also be a host of street entertainment and fun for youngsters. Organisers have been busy arranging a fun fair, marching bands, Santa s grotto and a Christmas raffle.

Jane said: 'We are hoping to repeat that success again. The organising of this year s event has been taking place since June and we are delighted with the response and support we have received from local businesses.
