Bexhill residents explore the night sky at astronomy event

The whole country will see more of the night skies as winter fast approaches. To celebrate the importance of looking to the skies above, local Bexhill housebuilder David Wilson Homes invited members of the community, including the local Mayor, to its Rosewood Park development for a stargazing event recently.

Iit is important to remember that light pollution does not only prevent people from seeing the universe above them, but it also disrupts wildlife, and contributes to energy waste.

To encourage residents to turn off their lights and admire the night skies above them, David Wilson Homes invited the Eastbourne Astronomical Society to deliver a talk at the show home at Rosewood Park, followed by a stargazing session on the outdoor green.

The residents learned about the moon, stars and constellations visible at this time of year, and gazed at the night sky through telescopes.

Keith Brackenborough, Chairman at Eastbourne Astronomical Society, commented: “The winter months provide an exciting opportunity for people to take interest in the universe above them, as there is no need to stay up late to see the stars. During our session we tried to show what people are missing out on when they do not look above their heads, so both adults and children were able to enjoy the view and take in the natural surroundings.”
