Ashburnham and Penhurst village voice

Thomas Albert Peters, affectionately known as “Bert” died on March 20 2012 aged 92. He was born in The Post Office in Ponts Green and lived there nearly all of his life. From his late teens he drove his father’s taxi’s, taking Ashburnham people to airports, school and various other destinations and was well known and loved by everybody.

After his father retired he took over running the businesses; the post office, petrol pumps, blacksmiths and taxi service. From his early 20’s he was secretary of the Ashburnham Congregational Chapel now The United Reformed Chapel and he preached there and in numerous other Churches in the area until a couple of years ago. During his lifetime he took an active part in village life, playing, football, cricket and stoolball. He always had a kind word for everybody he met and was always available for villagers to tell their troubles and concerns to. His love for his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ radiated throughout his whole life. His life revolved around The Chapel and he would have been overwhelmed to see the 200 or so people that turned out to say goodbye to him at his Service of Thanksgiving on April 5 2012. He was taken from the Chapel to Penhurst Church where he was laid to rest with his wife Audrey who passed away many years previously. The Ashburnham and Penhurst Gardening Club’s April meeting is on Monday April 23, 7.30pm at the Church Hall, Ashburnham Place..This month is a talk entitled “Tales from the Potting Shed” with Jim Payne. The East Sussex County Council Mobile Library service will next be in Ashburnham (by the chapel) on Thursday April 26, 9.50am - 10.10am.

The Ashburnham and Penhurst book group gets together on Friday April 27. This month, they are reading Dickens’ “Our Mutual Friend”. If you’d like to borrow a copy to read, give Nicky a call. From now on, the book group will be meeting on the fourth Friday of the month.Remember, you don’t have to come to their gatherings to read the books - just ask Nicky if you’d like to borrow a copy. The Ashburnham & Penhurst Diamond Jubilee Fund Raising Committee are holding a coffee morning at The Sports Pavilion on Saturday April 28 10.00am – 12.00pm.
