Arun debate tonight on Ford Eco-Town

CONTROVERSIAL proposals for a new Eco-Town of 5,000 homes at Ford Airfield will be discussed in public for the first time tonight (Monday, April 14, 2008).

Arun District Council's cabinet is holding a special meeting at 6pm, to which MPs Nick Gibb and Nick Herbert, whose constituencies include the airfield, have been invited.

Both MPs and the council have already voiced strong concerns about the inclusion of Ford in a short-list drawn up by the Government of 15 potential Eco-Towns, which will be reduced to 10 by the end of the year.

However, Labour councillors from Littlehampton have warned against Arun making a "knee-jerk" reaction to the scheme, which they say could bring genuine benefits to their town.

The meeting, originally scheduled at 4pm but now starting at 6pm, is at the Arun Civic Centre, Littlehampton, and the public is welcome to attend.
