Samantha Boyd said Arun Childminders, a group of independent childminders covering Littlehampton, Rustington, East Preston, Angmering and Yapton, had taken on the challenge after a member’s daughter became seriously ill last year and the charity supported the family.

Rachel Keogh, a childminder from Angmering, explained that her younger daughter, Jessica, had been diagnosed with a rare blood disorder, known as HLH, at the age of seven.

“The disorder means the immune system goes into overdrive,” she said.

“She had to go through six months of chemotherapy. We don’t know what will happen long-term as it is so rare, not everyone follows the same pathway.”

Jessica is now nine and her older sister, Emily, is 14. Rachel said they were both fine at the moment.

More than £520 was raised for Rockinghorse, which is based at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton and aims to improve the lives of sick children throughout Sussex.
