Aldwick is home to birds and bats

Birds and bats are now feeling at home in Aldwick.

Ten bird boxes and eight bat boxes installed in West Park are now being used by the happy fliers. Their installation was the first project of the Friends of West Park.

Secretary Iain Fraser said: "These attractive nesting boxes can now be observed in the trees all around the perimeter of the park.

"They have been placed strategically, with the bird boxes all facing east in the way the birds like it.

"Each box will provide accommodation for two birds and, later, their eggs when the time comes around.

"The bat boxes can accommodate up to eight bats 'hanging around'. They don't care much about the direction they face as long as there is a straight clear flight into their new homes."

The boxes were the Friends' first project to fulfil their role of enhancing the biodiversity of the park and protecting and improving its environment to the benefit of everyone. They also want to ensure its many users appreciate and know all about the seafront site.

The installation of the boxes was achieved with the support of the county council's Jackie Lewis, from its rural operations team, county council countryside ranger John Knight, Arun District Council arboriculture officer Ian Brewster and his tree surgeons Nigel Sampson and Richard Moore.

It was last March when the Friends were set up with the support of Arun's parks and greenspace department.

The group's aim is to conserve West Park to be enjoyed as a place for recreation, enjoyment and study. More details from Mr Fraser on [email protected] or 01243 830333.
