Dozens of motorists were stranded yesterday afternoon (July 22) after the ticket machines in the Liverpool Road car park, behind TK Maxx, stopped working.

A spokesman for the car park management company CP Plus said the machines were now working and people could pay for their parking online.

“All the details are on the signs by the machines. The website where you can pay up to 24 hours after the parking event and register to be able to pay by text is Montague Centre

“Anyone who receives a PCN and would like to discuss this should follow the process for challenging it (found on the website) and we will look at each case individually on its merits.”

Number plate recognition cameras detect those leaving the site without paying - leaving them with a hefty fine.

Worthing resident Damien Thorpe had to go to the shops on his lunch break when he got stuck in the car park. He said he could not find information on how to pay for his parking online.

“I got caught up in it yesterday,” said Mr Thorpe.

“I have been trying to pay my £1 ticket however I could not find anything on the website about how to pay for it. There only seemed to be an option to pay for a penalty charge. It’s not very clear.

“A lot of people were getting very irate.”
