Cookmere Meals are a far cry from frozen mass-produced convenience meals in plastic boxes, delivered in a hurry.

It is a local meals on wheels company located in the lovely Lower Dicker, Hailsham, East Sussex. Since its inception it has been working hard to build strong working relationships with its customers and local food producers. Its service connects those in need with freshly cooked, high quality, home-cooked meals, without having to leave the comfort of their home.

Quality ingredients are used to produce delicious and nutritious meals which are brought to the door, served on proper plates. The friendly team of drivers get to know their customers. Care is taken to ensure the welfare of customers is paramount – the hot meals service includes a free welfare check for extra peace of mind. Having meals prepared can help reduce the risk of malnutrition and social isolation and Cookmere takes care to get to know a person’s individual dietary needs and tastes.

There have been many heart-warming stories at Cookmere. Recently one of its delivery drivers arrived at a house to find the customer had had a fall, so his commitment meant he made her comfortable and stayed with her for a further 90 minutes to await the ambulance.

Who is this service for?

Most home delivery customers live independently, but, either temporarily or permanently, may need meals cooked for them. This might be a few meals a week, or seven days a week, 365 days a year. It could be that because of age, mobility, or illness someone is finding shopping, preparing and cooking meals every day is becoming more of a burden – and that can be a worry for them and their family.

What’s cooking?

The company collectively boasts an impressive 30+ years of kitchen experience amongst its team of cooks

They use local food suppliers as much as possible which gives the kitchen a treasure trove of fresh ingredients on a daily basis. This ensures fresh, seasonal ingredients are used and helps the business take important steps to be environmentally friendly.

Meals come either ready to eat right away, or chilled to heat up at the customers’ convenience. All chilled meals are presented beautifully of a china plate with a plate ring, all wrapped up to stay fresh and means customers can see the meal before they unwrap it.

Main meals and desserts can be adapted for all dietary requirements. There are gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian and vegan options.

There are main meals, such as roast lamb dinner, fish and chips or smoked haddock in a cheese sauce, desserts including homemade apple crumble and custard, dark chocolate and orange tart or lemon meringue pie. There is also a selection of sandwiches and afternoon teas.

The meal choices change every week and the menu is updated on a four-weekly basis. There are options to have meals cut up or pureed too.

How does it work?

There is no contract and no delivery charges. You can choose whether to order meals hot and ready to eat or chilled to heat later and payment can be by credit card, debit card or direct debit.
