A look back through the archives of the Bexhill Observer

A LETTER from the Town Clerk was read on the subject of his renumeration. Recommended: That the Town Clerk's salary be increased as from April next to the sum of 450 per annum, rising by two annual increments of 25 to a maximum of 500. - Town Council report.

THE annual meeting of the Bexhill Ambulance Brigade was held last (Friday) evening at the Bexhill Institute. The last year has been one of steady rather than startling development. Of the personnel, the Brigade has increased from 17 officers and men at the date of the last report, to 21 officers and men at the present time. No important additions have been made to the appliances, but the whole have been carefully inspected by the senior Hon. Surgeon and the Superintendent.

THE public rebuke which the Mayor administered to a small but chattering section of the company at a dinner this week was most timely. Afterwards, Councillor Carter was congratulated by a number of the other diners who had been embarrassed by thee discourteous behaviour during the speech-making. The practice has grown in recent years of attendance at dinner-parties of various organisations by some people who have no interest in the proceedings other than that of dining and dancing. - Town Talk column.

COMPLAINTS about the "one-man" buses are completely justified, said Councillor F.E. Cooper at the Town Council meeting on Wednesday. He told the Council: "There is every justification for the number of complaints. The last place I would have anticipated having a "one-man" bus was on the Sidley route. This introduction of one-man buses has proved a big mistake."

PROPOSALS which may well provide at least part of the answer to the town centre traffic problem are contained in a preliminary report of a survey to find a way of providing loading space for commercial vehicles behind the shops themselves. The report is the result of a survey carried out at the request of the Town Council by Mr. P. H. Evenden.

PLANS for a purely-voluntary emergency corps to take over where the old Civil Defence Corps leaves off after its disbandment at the end of March have been put to the Borough Civil Defence Committee. Members of the local Civil Defence Corps are anxious to maintain the work they have been doing in the past.

LOCAL councillors and residents are fighting plans to put four gipsy camps in Bexhill. Three sites at Pebsham and one at Glyne Gap '“ all on land owned by Rother council '“ have been proposed by a joint action group opposing sites in Bodiam and Staplecross.

SINCE moving to its new premises in Western-road, Bexhill Citizens' Advice Bureau has reported a sharp increase in the number of inquiries from the public. Total inquiries made during the first month in the new office were more than double those made in the last month in the old premises in London Road.

PRIVATE contractors could be preparing the Polegrove bowling greens and weeding the seafront flower beds next year if Government plans come to fruition. Conversely, in theory, Eastbourne's famous promenade carpet gardens could be tended by Rother council staff working under contract. The Government wants all councils to put their work out to competitive tender. The aim is greater efficiency.

A MONTH ago contractors were racing ahead with Bexhill's CCTV scheme. Now the town's six cameras sit in storage gathering dust. The 150,000 scheme to provide Bexhill and Sidley with closed circuit television protection has stalled because some donors who pledged support have still not stumped up the cash. The project's partners have had to tell contractors Hi-Tec to keep the cameras in storage until the 2,000 shortfall can be made good.

AN earth-mover was working at the Charters Ancaster School site this week as the future of the former school hung in the balance. Property developers McLeans are interested in the Penland Road site- but the Bexhill Regeneration Partnership still wants it for a performing arts centre.
