Southern Railway only wants to open them from 7am to 10am. Sales would otherwise be made from a station hosting point on each concourse. Those hours would be greater than the current office opening hours.

A Southern Railway spokesman said: “Our plans are simply to modernise the way we operate about 80 of our busier stations to improve the service we give our passengers. We want to bring staff out from the ticket office on to the concourse where they can be easily accessible for passengers.

“As station hosts, they will be available to help passengers with all aspects of their journey, including helping to sell tickets from ticket machines and their own handheld devices.

“These stations will be staffed from first time in the morning until the last at night, seven days a week.”

Barnham’s ticket office is open 5.30am-10.25pm, Mondays to Saturdays and 6am-9.25pm on Sundays and Bognor’s from 6am-7.50pm six days a week and 8.10am-7.45pm Sundays.

The proposed hours are 5.30am-11pm at Barnham and 5.05am-10pm at Bognor for six days and 7am-10pm Sundays.
