VIDEO: Join hospice as it goes ‘back to it’s roots’ with 1980s themed walk

Dig out those leg warmers and dust down your walkman for St Catherine’s Hospice’s 1980s themed Midnight Walk which takes place on Saturday, July 13.

As part of the hospice’s 30th anniversary celebrations, the Horsham Park fundraiser, is having a 1983 style make-over for it’s sixth event of it’s kind.

Siobhan Meaker, PR & communications manager for St Catherine’s Hospice, said: “It’s a really fun way to support a well-loved cause. We look after a lot of people in the area and there are lot’s of personal reasons why people take part.

“This year we’ve got personal trainer to Davina McCall and other celebrities, Jackie Wren, who will have lots of ideas and tips on how to get fit walking and will be leading a warm up on the night.

“It’s a really good fun night, we’re going back to our roots and are already choosing the playlists for lots of 1980s tunes and you can find us on Facebook to join in conversations with chances to share stories, music and pictures as well.”

Sponsored by Crawley based Welland Medical, this year there is a new seven mile route as well as the traditional half marathon.

With this new choice of challenge, the hospice hopes more ladies than ever will step out in style to help raise funds that ensure care for patients living with a terminal illness, and support for their friends, families and loved ones.

Jen Wickham, events fundraiser at St Catherine’s Hospice, said: “Horsham was one of the first towns to establish a fundraising support group for the hospice at the start of the 1980s.

“Nowadays, thanks to the generosity of local people and companies, we are able to care for around 1,600 people a year across Mid Sussex and East Surrey. Our Midnight Walk has helped raise over £700,000 towards this care and comfort in its first five years and we’re hoping our 30th anniversary event will be the best ever.

“The new route means there’s something to suit all ladies and it’s not a race, but a fabulous, feel-good, fundraising night out. So whether you’re fond of Jane Fonda or you left your plimsolls behind with your school days, set yourself a challenge and sign up to our Midnight Walk.”

Entry is just £15 and you’ll get a welcome pack including an eye-catching limited edition Midnight Walk T-shirt and access to training tips and ideas to help boost your fundraising and fitness.

Alison Light, from Horsham, has decided to do the walk for the first time this year after her mum died last November. She said:“I just feel I’d like to help a lot of others this year. I know someone who died in St Catherine’s Hospice and I just want to do my bit for them really.”

Claire Sheehan, also from Horsham, is taking part in the fundraising event as her mother-in-law was looked after in the hospice: “The care she had on the night she died was fantastic so I’m doing it in her memory.”
