Walliams book adaptation to premiere on Horsham Capitol stage

On the first stop of a nationwide tour, Walliams’ best-selling Gangsta Granny will be performed in Horsham by the Birmingham Stage Company in November.

It will follow the world premiere of two new Horrible Histories shows – Groovy Greeks and Incredible Invaders - this Easter and Wisdom of a Fool about the life of Norman Wisdom in September.

Capitol general manager Nick Mowat said: “To host one world theatre premier in a year is quite something for us, so to be hosting three, plus a film premiere as well makes 2015 look like it’s going to be a very special year for us and the residents of Horsham District.

“Gangsta Granny is one of the most successful children’s books in recent years and to be able to offer Horsham the first ever performances of this brand new stage adaptation is a real thrill for us at The Capitol. The show is only with us for six performances, so it really will be ‘book early to avoid disappointment’.”

Next month the theatre will also be screening a premiere of the thriller A Dark Reflection, which was filmed in the town by Horsham company Fact Not Fiction Films.

Walliams is best known for his partnership with Matt Lucas in shows including Little Britain. Granny Gangsta is a favourite for many schoolchildren and has been translated into 25 languages since it was published in 2011.

He said: “I am over the moon that ‘Gangsta Granny’ is coming to the stage.

“It’s the most popular of all my books and I am sure this production by the brilliant Birmingham Stage Company will delight not just children but their parents and of course grandparents’.”

Gangsta Granny, which was made into a film in 2013, tells the story of Ben and his visits to Granny’s.

Normally bored by endless meals of cabbage, he discovers granny has a secret and Friday nights are about to get more exciting than he could possibly imagine.
