ON Monday, September 29 an almost full coach of members went on an outing to Hertford House in Manchester Square, London W.1 to discover the Wallace Collection.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, four generations of the Marquesses of Hertford and Sir Richard Wallace made their own distinctive contributions to the finest collection of art ever assembled by one family.

Displayed in Hertford House, we saw world-famous works of art like Hal's "Laughing Cavalier" and Fragonard's "The Swing" in the setting of this family London Home. There were other Old Masters by Titian, Rubens, Velazquez, Rembrandt, Caneletto and Gainsborough. There were French 18th century paintings, furniture, sculpture and marvellous Sevres porcelain. There were lovely miniatures and objets d'art, and a huge collection of armoury of all sorts.

The weather was fine and sunny, and everyone enjoyed the visit to this sometimes little known gem of a museum and an international treasure house. There was also a little time for some to do some retail therapy in Oxford Street - just down the road!

The next outing is to a Dickensian Christmas in Rochester on Saturday, December 6.
