Observing the nation and the way we live
Lucy Bell Gallery in St Leonards next week presents The English by renowned photographer Ian Berry.
The show from October 20 - January 9 includes work never before seen or published. ‘The English’ was commissioned by the Arts Council and published as a book for which he photographed the English at work and play between 1974-75. ‘The English’ is a sensitive and highly personal exploration of England and english life from the perspective of a Magnum photographer who grew up in the North of England, but spent a substantial part of his life abroad. Berry made his reputation in South Africa, where he worked for the Daily Mail and Drum magazine. He was invited by Henri Cartier-Bresson to join Magnum Photos in 1962 when he was based in Paris.
