Bexhill Probus Club

Rother District Council's director of services, Anthony Leonard, took a couple of hours away from the Town Hall to give a talk to members at our September meeting.

With the aid of an illustrated presentation he started with a brief summary of how the provision and funding of our services is split between Central Government, ESCC and RDC.

Mr Leonard continued with a run down of his responsibilities which cover, amenities, environmental health, housing, planning and regeneration. The remainder of his talk concentrated on the latter, much in the news due to the controversy surrounding the proposals for the regeneration of the seafront and Colonnade. He did however touch on other Bexhill projects such as the DLWP, the museum, the new high school, Sainsbury's expansion and the link road.

On a final note he was pleased to announce that RDC was placed 14th on The Times list of best performing councils and that it had the lowest rate of council tax in East Sussex.

Then followed a wide ranging question and answer session, when many of the queries concerning the sea front development were discussed at length amongst other topics.

To conclude; Eric Tomkins proposed a vote of thanks on behalf of all present.

Our next meeting will be on October 23 when the speaker will be John Dowling, who needs no introduction to anyone living in the town, his talk will be on Bexhill during World War ll.

Also this month, on the 30th we will be lunching at Sedlescombe Golf Club, bookings with cheques to Graham Ellery no later than the 23rd please.

We are a relatively small club and so rely on the majority of members to attend meetings so as to present a good audience for our speakers, 60 per cent attendance is not really good enough. Just a gentle reminder!
