Bexhill Down Afternoon Townswomen's Guild

AFTER their August break, Bexhill Down Townswomen's Guild started their Autumn Programme with a talk on Gruyere cheese and some delicious 'tastings'.

Food and drink were also the subject of the Reading for Pleasure Section. Pam Ayes has written on many subjects and her description of her Mother's Suet Puddings was most amusing. Dickens invoked an old-fasioned Christmas in 'A Christmas Carol' with the Crachit's goose and stuffing. Worcestershire has its sauce and Sussex its Sussex Pond Pudding, whilst Maids of Honour are still eaten in Surrey. To bring us up to date, we learned the history of Hovis, first baked in 1890, with many well-remembered TV ads over the years and soon to be brought up to date with a new campaign advertising their 'Little Brown Loaf'.

Ramblers chose one of the few sunny days for their walk at Alfriston, even gathering a few blackberries on the way.

At our Social Studies Meeting, we admired handmade quilts and, although Christmas may be weeks away, it is always good to be prepared and we were intrigued by the tree ornaments and table decorations which had also been made in readiness for the festive season.

Our next Guild Meeting will be at Friends Meeting House, Albert Road, at 2pm on Wednesday, October 8. Phone 218756 for details.
