Window lantern display to replace Shoreham Light Parade this year

The annual event organised by community arts and craft initiative Apron, which usually takes place on the third Saturday of January, normally sees people of all ages march through the town with bright lanterns.

Due to the pandemic, Apron is instead asking people to come together by displaying a light or lantern in their windows.

The idea was inspired by the rainbows which were displayed in windows during the first lockdown.

Lis Long from Apron said: “A homemade lantern can be as simple as a tea light in a jam jar, or as elaborate as people want to make them. Or, it could be a picture.

“The idea is that anyone can make one, put it in their window and shine a light to their neighbours as a signal of kindness and hope for better times ahead.”

She said it was ‘the safest and most accessible way for people to do something collectively’.

People can share their lantern by posting a picture of it on Facebook and Instagram, using the hashtag #shorehamlightparade to inspire more people to get involved.
