The PS3 Network- the source of the console’s online gaming capabilities- has been down for nearly a week after a hacker broke through its firewalls, last Tuesday (April 19).

Now the company fears that the unknown hacker may have access to thousands of gamer’s credit card details, as well as their adresses, names and netwrok passwords.

A spokesperson from Sony said: “While there is no evidence that credit card data was taken at this time, we cannot rule out the possibility.

“If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, to be on the safe side we are advising you that your credit card number and expiration date may have been obtained.

“We encourage you to remain vigilant to review your account statements and to monitor your credit or similar types of reports.”

Sony are also advising gamers to be wary of potential email, postal mail or telephone scams, that ask for credit card details.

“Sony will not contact you in anyway. If you’re asked for this information you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking,” said the company. “We regret any inconvenience.

“Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible.
